When it comes to no-frills reliability and function before form, it’s difficult to think of another backpack that ranks above the good old Eastpak. Let a bunch of the year’s most en vogue designers loose on the iconic design, however, and it takes on a new life entirely.

Jean Paul Gauthier, Walter Van Beirendonck, and Manolo Blahnik are just some of the big names to have participated in Eastpak’s annual Artist Studio Collection in the past, and now the likes of Vetements, Kenzo, and Christopher Raeburn have signed up for the 2016 edition; transmogrifying the travel staple into veritable works of art.

Demna Gvasalia and Vetements reimagine the classic black silhouette with a huge haul loop and shoulder straps, but even that looks positively vanilla when compared against KENZO’s 3D pocket-equipped colossus. Christopher Raeburn taps his primal side for a monkey design, while Inan’s effort comes equipped with a detachable hoodie.

The list of designers involved in the 2016 Artist Studio Collection includes: Vetements, Kenzon, Christopher Raeburn, Nicopanda, Ami Paris, Wanda Nylon, House of Holland, Jacquemus, Giambattista Valli, Alexandre Vauthier, and Inan.

The backpacks will go on sale at the Eastpak website on December 1 and, as before, all proceeds raised will go directly to the Designers Against Aids Charity.
